The Supreme Court today held that employees, including casual ones, are covered under the Employees’ State Insurance Act.

The court said welfare legislation does not prescribe that he or she has to work for a particular period for availing the benefit.

The court gave a wide interpretation to the term ‘employee’, while rejecting Mumbai’s horse racing club Royal Western India Turf Club Ltd’s contention that its temporary staff engaged on race days for issue of tickets would not be granted benefit of the Act.
